THE PAST: EARLY WEARABLES
"The first wearable computer was created in the 1960s by Edward Thorp and Claude Shannon, which was a small computer that could fit inside a shoe and was used to predict the outcome of roulette games." (The Evolution of Wearable Technology: Past, Present, and Future – Infradapt, 2023). With this just being the first small computer wearable capable of playing games, they knew they were getting something. Still, it was not until the 1970s that the first digital watches were introduced, followed by early pedometers in the 1980s. But when they were first introduced, there was a problem: just like when something first comes out, they were bulky and expensive and did not attract the attention they thought they would, so they did not sell as they had hoped until much later.
THE PRESENT: WEARABLE TODAY
Let's talk about the wearables today and how the technology has changed over the years, and how each year the wearables get something different and new added to them, and that is what makes them so cool and interesting and keeps people continuing to buy them time and time again. The coolest thing about the wearables is the ability they have to help track health-related concerns and even help with tracking mental health concerns, which, with today's growing population of mental health concerns, is a really good feature to have for those who are really struggling and need that outlet to be able to track how they feel. " Wearables can track changes in biometric data, such as heart rate variability, to provide insights into an individual’s emotional state".
